Merry Modkid Tour Featuring Charlotte

So glad to be of the Merry Modkid Tour! I instantly fell for Charlotte when I saw the cover to the pattern. Here's my Charlotte on Amelia.

Don't forget to go all the way to the end of this post for the giveaway!

I didn't make changes to the pattern pieces, but I did play around with the button sizes and ended up using two big buttons and a small handsewn snap for the front closure instead of the recommended 6 buttons.

The fabric is Subtle Blooms from Free Spirits from the Pirouette collection. It was supplied to me by Christine over at Threads and Stiches...you really need to go check out her Etsy shop with all the gorgeous fabrics in it!

The bodice is fully lined so one would think that its a huge project. Infact, this was fairly quick considering having to sew up two bodices and the belt detail at the back.

There are many options to this pattern and I went with the short sleeve as per Amelia's request, the belted back rather than the tied sash, tunic length with the inseam pockets.

The instrustions to the pattern are so easy to follow with multiple drawings to accompany the steps.

I added the detail of the lace at the front but didn't have enough to go around the neckline and I also would have wanted some at the lower hem, but when you're sewing from your stash you use what you have and try not to go out and buy more.

This is what you get when your 4 year old wants to go outside for pictures in the freezing cold, you follow her and let her do her thing...She was saying that she loved her pockets because the kept her warm, Ha!

I did get the pattern for free for the purpose of the tour but all opionions are my own!

Christmas Stocking - Contest and Giveaway!

So its starting to feel a little more like Christmas. First, the blog post about Morton Elf is trending again and second, I've been making stockings!

Lynn over at The Handmaiden's Cottage has a fantastic Patchwork Stocking pattern and she's offering it for FREE for all those who sign up for the newsletter.

We also want to see all those fantastic creations! Join the Handmaiden's Cottage Pattern Group and post the stocking you've made using #PatchworkStocking for your chance to win a fat quarter bundle valued at over $100.00. The winner will be selected at random on December 11th, 2015.

There are a few options for this patchwork stocking pattern, here are the ones I made.

I mixed up fabrics but stayed with a very basic color palatte, I even mixed up the styles a little to use the basic design and then the more intricate patchwork. Adding details in the top stitching is also a good way to fancy it up without spending a lot of money on trim. For the basic stocking layout I used grosgrain ribbon and a blanket stitch (that I have on my sewing machine). You could also use ric rac instead of grosgrain. I like to try and use what I have on hand.

There's just so much you can do with this pattern!

I really can't wait to see everyone's stocking! So remember, sign up for the newsletter here to get your pattern for FREE, post your stocking to the group here using #PatchworkStocking and you'll have a chance to win a fat quarter bundle! Fun, right!

Until next time, xx.

Sweet Dreams Vintage Style

I've been away a lot for the month of July and already we're the first week into August! Time just flies, and I want it to slow down...just a bit. Just because I was away doesn't mean I didn't get any sewing done, my sewing machine has gone on its first road trip! I made the girls each a vintage style sleep set using patterns from Rabbit Rabbit Creations

You'll want to read to the end because Jasmin has offered to give away to one lucky reader a bundle of 3 Rabbit Rabbit Creations patterns, winner choice!

These sleep sets are perfect for those hot summer night. I used cotton that I've had for a while in my stash, but you could also use cotton voile, swiss dot, and I would even be game to try it in a cotton jersey however it wouldn't give the same vintage look to it but I bet it would be really comfy.

Although I used the same patterns and for both sets I want to make them a little different. JubeJube and Amelia really have thier own style and yes they both wear the same size in clothing, but seeing that JubeJube is 6 years old and Amelia only 4 years old I wanted to give JubeJube's PJ a little more of a big sister look to it by adding eyelet trim to it.

While making Amelia's set I ran out of single fold bias to make the elastic casing...its 2am, all stores are closed but I did have some cute elastic in my stash. Instead of putting the elastic in the inside I used a zigzag stitch and laid it on top as an embelishment. I added a little satin ribbon to make a bow. I also added some of that fun elastic to the cami so that both the cami and bloomers would have the same style.

For JubeJube I added some eyelet to the cami at the front and also to the hem of the bloomers. I used the seam allowances at the hem of the bloomers to create my elastic casing.

The pieces came together quite quickly and the pattern has great photos with the step-by-step instructions in the tutorial.

Just in case you're wondering, these are the woods right in back of my aunt's house, about 25 km from Mount-Tremblant, Quebec. This is where I spent most of the month of July.

Until next time, xx.

Canadian Designers Blog Tour, Elegance & Elephants

I'm back for a second time on the Canadian Pattern Designer tour. You can see my post on Toronto based Victory Patterns here. Today its all about Elegance & Elephants and the Bohemian Babydoll dress. Don't miss the interview with Hiedi, designer at Elegance & Elephants, on Lulu & Celeste. Read all the way to the end and don't forget to enter the rafflecopter giveaway for a chance to win a pattern by E&E.

This sweet and simple dress features so many little details like the square neckline and the curve of the empire waistline.

Elegance & Elephants designs have been a long time favorite of mine since I discovered PDF patterns. The tutorials on her blog are simple and clever...I need to make that pleated play suit, and I think you'll agree once you take a look at it.

Some of the pattern details include:

  • Size ranges from 6 months to 9 years
  • 3/8" seam allowances included
  • Fully lined bodice
  • Slips over the head, no button or zipper closure required
  • Layered printing so you print out only the sizes you need or want
  • Prints on both standard 8.5X11" and A4 paper

The pattern calls for the flutter sleeves to be lined but I changed that up and  left them unlined and I used a simple rolled hem on those sleeves then assembled the dress as indicated in the tutorial.

I also added a piping at the waistline to accentuate the curve in this design.

This is my favorite design feature of Bohemian Babydoll, the hem facing. I took advantage of this to add a contrasting fabric. Amelia voted for polka-dots and I agreed it would be a perfect match to the orange floral print.

Canadian Designers Blog Tour, Victory Patterns

How excited am I to post about Victory Patterns today as part of the Canadian Designers blog tour hosted by Ula of Lulu & Celeste! Victory Patterns, incase you didn't know, is based in Toronto, Ontario and has several women's patterns available in their shop. I just can't believe how much talent is right here in Canada!

You're going to want to read all the way to the end because there is a giveaway to enter with rafflecopter and a discount code for all those who want to get a jumpstart on sewing their very own Victory pattern.

I sewed up a very simple version of the Roxanne blouse with a printed chiffon fabric.

This pattern features a number of options including a 3/4 length sleeve and a collar, you'll also notice a dramatic hi-low hem and ties at the front neckline on my version.

At the back you notice  pleats below the yoke. Those pleats give this top a wonderful flow.

Here are some of the pattern details:

  • Seam allowances 5/8" included
  • Metric and imperial charts for finished garment measurements
  • Charts for fabric requirements
  • Designed for light woven fabrics, such as ciffon, cotton voile, crepe, georgette
  • Can be purchased in paper or PDF form
  • Detailed tech drawing included in the instructions
  • I would say this is a confident beginner pattern

From June 17th to the 23rd get 15% off  your order in the Victory Pattern shop. Use the code CANADATOUR at checkout.
