One Thimble Issue No.21 and Thread Faction No. 131

I've really been missing One Thimble and that's why even if my time is so limited these days I did want to take time out to sew from the newest issue. I made the drop crotch joggers #131 from Thread Faction... Liz Elliott's patterns never disappoint!

Amelia would live in joggers if I let her so the fact that I got to make her a stylish pair really was a hit with her. Again thinking of the time crunch I'm in with back to school and work I didn't do anything fancy with top stitching or using the cover stitch. I even used the fabric I had from my stash. The pattern was so quick to assembly with my serger, I just made sure I pressed my seams to give a nice crisp look.

We're nearing the cooler season here, back to school means fall so I paired the pants with a raglan tee. get this same look by using pattern #121 by Thread Faction in issue No.20 of One Thimble.

I used a light weight French terry with a 5% lycra, and it was the perfect type of fabric for this project.

The format for One Thimble has changed just a bit but still offers such fun projects. I think I'm going to make the tote bag next or maybe the dress from Jilly Atlanta?  Go check it out, you won't be disappointed!

Retro Romper One Thimble No. 20

A new issue of One Thimble (affiliate link) is out! Hard to imagine that One Thimble is celebrating its fifth year with issue No.20!
You'll want to read this post all the way to the end and enter the giveaway for a $50.00 voucher for your next purchases of the One Thimble e-zine.

It never fails, when Thread Faction gets a pattern published in One Thimble, it's the first one I have to try out. This issue Thread Faction has two patterns in the e-zine!

I started with the Retro Romper. I love everything about this style! JubeJube says she's super comfortable in it and I think she looks beach and play ready.

I used a cotton lycra blend that I had in my stash and snaps for the closure. Buttons ca also be used and tips for button holes in knits are given in the tutorial.

Instructions and tech drawings are really well done (as usual with Tread Faction) and included are some tips for sewing knits. For a size 7, I didn't even use up a full meter of fabric and including printing and pattern assembly I spent maybe 90 minutes on this sew.

The second pattern from Tread Faction in this issue is the Ringer Raglan. I just had to make a coordinating tee for Amelia. I used the same cotton lycra blend on the sleeve and used a plain white for the front and back... added a little whimsy with the Big Ocean Appliqués by Swoodson Says.

What I love about this raglan is the binding at the sleeve. I was able to use the same red binding on the neckline and the sleeve as I didn on the romper and I just think the contrast makes everything pop.

The appliqué was so fun to put together. I used prints that maybe wouldn't go well together for a garment but put them together as an appliqué and I think it turned out really cute!

So many fun things to sew in this issue like the Rock Pool Catch and the Saltwater Skirt, but also so many fun things to read too!
There's a great article about formalwear by So Sew Katie. This article gives a good jumping off point to making your own formalwear and couple of those is to use Pinterest as inspiration and not skimp on the quality of fabric. Check it out for yourself.
You'll also find a couple of extra fun tutorials, fun things to sew like the sun glasses case by The Crafting Fiend and the tote bag that can also be used as a beach bag by Libby and Mae.

Ok, enough from me, besides I need to go sew some more from this issue of One Thimble!
Check out the other stops on the tour!

One Thimble No.19 Pinky Promise Purse

Hey all! Some of you may have noticed I'm a little MIA on my blog, yes, it's true, I have a dream job that takes up some of my sewing and blogging time. I'll let you in on the dream job at another time, for now let's just celcbrate Playtime and the 19th issue of One Thimble (affiliate link)!

This time I've sewn up one project, the Pinky Promise Purse. The original intent was to sew it up for me, but since JubeJube loved it so much I just couldn't say no to her. She loved the size of it and how easy it was to open and close with the magnetic snap.

I changed the length of the strap and removed the swivel hooks for the simple reason that I didn't have enough time to order and receive them on time for sewing up this project and I didn't find any the recommended 1/2" size at my local store.

The layout of the tutorial for this pattern is layout a little different than what I'm used to seeing. The written text is all on the top half of the page and the photographs of the steps is on the bottom half. This makes it a little harder to follow since I'm not used to it, but it doesn't take away from the tutorial. The photos are clear and it is well written. The pattern pieces all fit well together, and printing and assembling the pattern pieces went well.

The fabric is Bird Watcher found at Club Tissus. I instantly knew I needed this fabric for the Pinky Promise Purse. The fabric is so vibrant and colorful!

Now off to make another for Amelia... and since I really do love the size for myself, I might just have to make another for me too!

Here's a sneak peek of what's inside One Thimble No.19, and don't forget to pick up your copy today!

One Thimble No.18 - Full Review

I can never get enough of One Thimble! There's always a surprise waiting for us inside and this time in Issue No.18 (affiliate link) is no different.

One huge surprise for me is the Origami top, I'm wishing it came in my size! I haven't sewn it up yet, but just looking at the photographs in the magazine you can bet it's right up there on my list of want-to-make projects. I did however make the Ladies' Ballerina tie top by The Wolf and the Tree and the Linnden Tote by Annie Zorzo.

First thing about this pattern by The Wolf and the Tree, actually it should be true for any pattern, not just this pattern ... take your measurements and follow the chart. Don't let the size you come up with scare you if its bigger than what you would usually make because in the end it's only a number. The important thing is that it fits you the way you want and that you're comfortable wearing it. Sizing on this pattern in on point when following the size chart!

The fabric was purchased in a little shop, just a 20 minute drive away, and there's always something to discover in this shop at a really great price! I can't be sure of the composition but there's probably some polyester, rayon and spandex. I can tell you that it's soft and cozy and I made sure I had at least 25% stretch to this lovely knit. I could have easily used a cotton lycra blend and it would have been as cozy.

For the ties I decided against making them lined simply due to the fact that I was afraid the ties would be too heavy and add extra bulk where I didn't need it.

And I seem to be noticing a trend here, I may like grey fabric just a little too much. The last three tops I made myself are grey, oh well!

I also made the Linnden Tote. The fabric is from my stash, I've had it for a few years. It's a heavier upholstery fabric. This bag was meant to have leather, cork or vinyl accents, and straps but I didn't have leather to work with and I don't have a sewing machine strong enough for it either. I figured I should try it with all fabric to give others the inspiration to make without the leather accents if they so desired.

The only thing I really regret not doing is putting interfacing in my straps. About the design; the tote is big enough, the bottom meausres 17.5 inches by 6 inches. It was designed without a lining but there is an interior  zipper pocket, perfect for a cell phone and small wallet. I think its the perfect shopping companion. I do wish there was an option to include a way to snap the bag at the top opening, and I think I'll put that on my next Linnden that I make.

More things to sew! I have to make sure that JubeJube and Amelia don't get to see these photos because you know they'll ask me to make every single pattern! One of their favorite things is to dress up and well, dress up ballerina style and pretending to be a ballerina do go hand in hand and  there's nothing wrong with that but I can hear JubeJubes now,  "No Amelia, jeté not plié" and this before 7am!

Besides all the patterns available in One Thimble No.18 you need to check out the articles... Some of you might know I love just about everything vintage, my favorite are vintage sewing machines. Bec Wood in her article, Not Made in China, tells us about her vintage love.

Follow the rest of the tour for more sewing inspiration from One Thimble!

One Thimble No.17 - Full Review

I had so much fun with this issue of One Thimble. One Thimble No. 17 (affiliate link) is so full of fun little and some not so little projects.

I stayed away from clothing this time and made several little things that can be perfect for gift giving.

The Blossom Flower Pincushion by My Little China Doll is a project I actually made twice. The first one wasn't to my liking so try, try again. The second row of petals didn't hug the center as much as in my second version. A little tip for that, simply pull that thread used to make the gathers really tight and secure it.

In the tutorial, it is suggested that instead of sewing the petals in place by hand, a glue gun can be used. I sewed mine in by hand, only because I couldn't find my glue gun I have to admit. Its just a bit longer but at least I know that if I gift this pincushion it won't fall apart. I tend to not used enough glue, lol.

This is also a perfect project for using up scraps that we can't bare to get rid of.

Now for the Flora Fiesta Embroidery project by Molly and Mama...

I didn't want to look too much at the original while I was trying to decide what colors go where. I went with the colored floss that I liked since there was no color chart included in the tutorial. This leaves a lot of room for creativity. I was also thinking at one point to make it using just white floss for a very monchromatic look.

I played around with different stitches, I added French knots to the center of flowers and used a stem stitch instead of backstitching. I was so excited about this project becasue I haven't had embroidered in such a long time. I started hand embroidering as a child and I just haven't taken the time to sit and get into a project.

I ended up reducing the pattern to 80% and was able to fit in in a 5 inch hoop. The suggested hoop size at 100% is 6 inches. The fabric is Robert Kaufman linen from Club Tissus.

Another fun gift done! This is great to hang on a wall in a child's room or use the design on a pocket or the front of a dress bodice.

On to my final project (for this blog post anyways). The Sewperior Fruit & Veg bags are such a fantastic idea for reducing waste! I used a mesh type screen fabric, again purchased at club Tissus.  I was beyon elated to see that they had this fabric on hand. It was a little more pricy than I thought it would be but in a long run it will save a lot on waste.

Grab a few of these bags before heading to the grocery store and they are perfect for fresh produce. What used to happen when I went grocery shopping is I would just drop the produce in the plastic bag in the fruit or vegetable drawer and often enough I would forget about it because I didn't take the time to take it out of those darn plastic bags. Now with these reusable bags I have to remove the porduce and prep it right away and I get to see what I have in the fridge.

I added a fun cotton print to the top of the bag to make the casings. Two sizes are mentioned in the tutorial. They are a great guideline but of course you can make them the size you want.

And yes, they make great hostess gifts, or teachers gifts, or anyone who is into reducing waste ans recycling.

Once again I also got to review the full issue and there are a couple of articles that got my attention. the first being 10 tips for faster sewing. A few of the tips I already did without knowing but one that I felt helpful was tip number 6. Its mostly a tip for bag making but the same tip can be useful when doing a lot of appliqué work and using Heat 'N Bond.

Then there's the article on Tiyamike Sewing by Jo Ong.  Its all about giving opportunity to women and girls in Blantyre, Malawi, Africa. These women and girls are learning to sew and learning about running there own business once they've graduated. Follow Tiyamike Sewing on Facebook  for more information.

Here's a quick look at what patterns you'll expect to in One Thimble No.17. Take a look at the other stops on this tour for more fun and more inspiration.

One Thimble No.16

Everyone knows how much I love the One Thimble e-zine (affiliate link). The themes are always so fun and most of the time have my imagination run off to far away places. Issue No. 16 will have you dreaming of the beach, clear waters, beautiful sunset and mermaids!

Of course you don't need to be at the beach to enjoy Issue No.16 of One Thimble and all the sewing patterns and tutorials included in this issue.  And by the way, if you want to win your own issue of One Thimble read to the end and enter the rafflecopter giveaway!

So let's get to it  because once I did start sewing from Issue No. 16 of One Thimble I just couldn't stop! All the patterns are so fun, I wanted to sew them all!

I started with the Hally Dress by Ainslee Fox. Such a fun summer dress!

I had Wonderful Things fabric from Art Gallery for just a short time, but it called to me and I couldn't ignore its bold beautiful flowers. I took a short cut and unsed pre-made bias.

This pattern comes in a huge range of sizes (sizes 1- 12), layering feature to print only the sizes you want, easy to follow tutorial and  step-by-step photos. This pattern was designed with woven fabrics in mind. I found the sizes ran a little big and had to shorten the straps for a better fit, but again JubeJube is slim and as a seamstress I always take into account that some alterations must be made for a perfect fit.

What I really love about this dress pattern is the original design of the straps. It makes the dress so delicate and sweet.

Next up the Triton Tank and Scuttle Shorts both by Ainslee Fox Boutique... Both great basics for a summer wardrobe.

What I liked:

  • Huge size range (1-12) for the Triton Tank and (3-12) for the Scuttle shorts
  • Layering feature to print only the sizes you need
  • Tank is a fast sew, no extra options but so easy to go add an appliqué, like Meg the mermaid featured in the One Thimble No.16.
  • Short have two length options and also a colour block option.

I found once again the sizes ran a little big and that especially the Triton Tank has large armhole openings so I layered it with another close fitting tank top. I think we can certainly chalk it up to JubeJube being on the slim side. One thing that will help you make your size selection is that the finished garment measurements are available and looking back I could have gone down a size in the width and kept the same length.

Both patterns were designed for knit fabrics. I used a light weight rayon spandex knit blend for the top and a french terry for the short.

The Pearlie dress by Peach Patterns is one of those easy to make and easy to wear dresses, designed with knit fabrics in mind. The sleeves are a short dolman style sleeve and the skirt is a shirt style hem with the back being slightly longer that the front.

This isn't a deal breaker for me but the layering feature isn't available on this pattern, so all sizes (1-12) get printed out at once.

I reversed the order a little and the first thing I did was put the pocket on the front bodice and then for the rest of the assembling I used my serger. I used a twin needle for hems and top stitching at the neckline.

Amelia chose the fabric for this project and has been wearing it straight out of the wash everytime she can since I've sewn it up. I think she'll need a couple of these for back to school.

Want to know more about this issue... Here's the scoop:

There's a bunch of fun dress up ideas! Going back to Issue No. 13 and the One Romper by Fille à Maman that was featured in that issue, easy costume ideas for Halloween, book day, character day dress up day at school, or simply dress up for fun were explored. And while we're on the subject of dress up, included in Issue No. 16 is an easy felt mask by Candice Mason over at Rose Petal Collection.Go check it out, I'm sure you'll find more than half a dozen project you can't wait to try!

I can't give away all the details of One Thimble No.16 but go check out the other stops on the inspiration tour.
