Basically Jalie Blog Tour

Find out what happens when you mix Jalie patterns, Discovery Trekking Outfitters base layer fabrics and a Brother 3550 coverstitch

I actually got my Sabrina walk into my sewing room, as I was sewing the last seam, saying "hummm, I like that, is it for me?" In all truthfullness, I had made Marie-Claude for me but how could I say no to such a face and I made sure that one of the conditions to getting said top was to get her to model it!

Now going back to the beginning of this project. I gave Discovery Trekking Outfitters a call to talk about the fabric I wanted to try. I spoke to Martha who was so helpful and patient. She spoke of the different properties the Polartec power wool has and I determined that I wanted to use the light-weight power wool. There are three different weights to the power wool : silk weight, lightweight and the heavier one which is more like a fleece. The combination of marino wool on the inside of the fabric and the polyester on the outside of the fabric help keep you toasty warm and dry while being active. The grid space traps warmth and keeps the fabric breathable. The fabric has enough stretch for comfort and ease of movement even for a close fitting garment.

After placing my order I received my fabric quickly, within the week! Washe it by machine and hung it to dry. I didn't want to take the change of shrinking the fabric since it does have wool in it. It washed beautifully and was even softer on the inside that when I received it.

I purchased the pattern some time ago first because I love raglan style tops and second, I also love hoodies. Since I had the pattern version (it can also be ordered online in a PDF home printable version) I traced out the size and pattern options I needed on a thin non-fusible interfacing.

When sewing, I would recommend stretch needles in your serger and coverstitch. My machine had issues with skipping stitches but changing the needles did the trick. I love the pink accent made with the coverstitch (and obviously so did Sabrina).

This pattern has three neckline options to it, I made the hoodie version but you can find a regular neckline and a turtle neck as well. Also included in the pattern are 27 sizes so this is a pattern that will get a lot of use.

PM Patterns Blog Tour

I think you can tell by her face that Amelia loves her new outfit!

I love trying out new designers, and P&M Patterns is new to me. Karine, the designer at P&M Patterns is based in Europe as has recently had all her patterns, landies' and children's, translated to English. The only thing that has not been changed is the paper format. The paper format available for at home printing is 4A so it doesn't fit standard US sized paper. I got over this hurdle but just popping in some legal sized paper and printing according to instructions. Included is a file so you can also have your patterns printed at your local print shop.

For this look I used Gus and Lollipop.

Gus is designed for a woven fabric but I made it in a knit. I love the drape of a rayon lycra knit. This one is so soft and light weight.

I made a size 6 according to the chart measurement, I had no need to go down a size due to the fact that I was using a knit. I changed the construciton just a bit since most of assembly was done with the serger. For the sleeves, instead of a flat assembly, I sewed up the side seams first then put in the sleeve as an inset sleeve.

The bow at the back is simple and elegant.

Other details on this top include gathers at the front shoulder seam, the waistband and the sleeve tabs.

About this sweet skirt...

This skirt has an adjustable elastic waistband at the back and the front lays flat. I didn't want to change any of the details of the hip pocket, they have been designed to perfection!

I shortened the main fabric of the skirt by about an inch so that I could lengthen the contrast band. I just love this fabric and I wanted to see a little more of it on the skirt.

Sizes for Gus and Lollipop range from 2 year to 12 years. The files that you get with your purchase include the tutorial with your choice of French or English, a list of required materials with size charts, home print file for 4A paper (I used legal size and it worked great) and a file for print shop.

Now the question is; will I make these patterns again.... you can bet on it. Both these patterns are really well put together, the tutorial is easy to understand with clear step-by-step drawings, and they are loaded with fun style! I'm even thinking I need to make Gus in my size!

More fun patterns and inspiration to check out! And don't forget to enter the giveaway for your chance to win a P&M pattern!

GYCT Spring Dress Blog Tour

What happens when I let Amelia choose one of three fabrics... She insists she needs all three of them for one dress. Thank goodness they were all white with a navy print!

I showed Amelia the listing photo of the Rival Raglan by GYCT. She got very excited at the prospect of having a new spring dress that was comfy and that would replace another dress that she grew out of.

Amelia actually had a plan and she knew what she wanted so I took full advantage. She was quite clear she wanted the sleeves to have stipes and the skirt to have polka-dots. I added the striped band at the bottom of the skirt to balance out all those prints and in the end she loves it and that's all that really matters!

First, I'm so happy to say that sizing is spot on when you follow the size chart! And it's a really quick sew, almost all done with the serger and used a twin needle for hems. You get all the different sleeve lengths in this pattern from long to short and everything in between! The only thing I may have done different from the instructions is adding the clear elastic at the waist in the seam allowance so that everything stays nice and straight and the waistline doesn't get stretched out from wear.

Also, there are two cut lines, one for the t-shirt and one for the dress to add the skirt. I left it t-shirt length since it did give a couple of extra inches to the bodice of the dress. I wanted the dress to have a little bit of a drop waist to it. Amelia really loves that style and I didn't want to disappoint.

I used a cotton lycra blend from my local Fabricville. We love this blend, it's so easy to wash and really comfortable to wear!

More fun styles are on the way with the GYCT Spring Dress Tour, don't be shy go take a look at the other stops! And don't for get to enter the giveaway!

Journey by Monaluna

I can't believe I get to do a third post with Monaluna Organic Fabrics! The new Journey collection is just so lovely to work with ... come see!

I love that every time I get my hands on some Monaluna Organic fabrics I'm inspired to go out of my comfort zone to make something that I don't normally make. I've admired Swoon Patterns (affiliate link) for years, purchased several of their patterns, made a Betty Bowler once but then never got around to making another...until now! I thought the Donna Vintage bag would be the perfect canvas to show case the Skull & Roses print.

With a little fussy cutting I managed to center the bigger skulls and highlight them. I made my own piping with the Birdseed in blue print.

Finally for the inside I used Arrows for the lining. Its a beautiful coral, its acutally a pitty that its hiding inside!

With all the fabulous prints in the Journey collection it was really hard to choose!

A huge thank you to Jennifer of Monaluna for supplying us with these wonderful fabrics! You'll want to check out the other stops on the tour today starting with Gemia, our hostess with the mostess, over at Phat Quarters

Hank & Clementine Fabric Tour

I've been looking forward to sharing this project with you for a least a week. Both the fabric design and quilt pattern are from Susan Emory for Michael Miller Fabrics.

This is my second twin sized quilt and with this one, Equal Rights, by Swirly Girls Design, I pushed myself to go beyond cutting and sewing on the grain line or cross grain. The 60° angle triangles create a fun design and the ruler used to help cut the pieces is easy to use once you get the hang of it. The rotary cutter has also become a good friend of mine with this poject. The instructions to the pattern were easy to follow and everything went together so nicely.

When I first saw the fabric it spoke to me of my childhood, those big bold flowers reminded me of a set of sheets I had when I was a child, my borther had the original Star Wars and I had florals... so now you know I'm talking about the 70's.

The Hank & Clementine collection as a whole is just beautiful, the colors are so vibrant and fun. The fabrics I selected are all from the Sprout color way. The greys and mint greens are so soothing and then there's the splash of bright coral. To make the coral really pop I decided to use a coral binding for the quilt. My first instinct was to go with grey, I knew with grey I couldn't go wrong, it was safe to go with grey but I wanted to be a little bold.

One of my favorite things to do with the left overs is to make a throw pillow cover. I had a few scraps left for the front of the pillow cover and the back of the pillow cover is the backing I used on the quilt. I used the same pattern and scale as I used for the quilt but with far fewer pieces. I used an invisible zipper for the closure. I store my quilts in the pillow covers when I'm not using the quilt.

So now that this one had a chance to wrap herself in the quilt and just lounge, she looked at me quite seriously and said, "Mom, can I keep it."
I couldn't help but laugh and answered no! I actually love that my Sabrina wanted it for herself, she might get the next one though... we'll see.

I want to thank Susan Emory and Michael Miller Fabrics for sponsoring the tour!

Handmade Holiday Tour with Love Notions

It happends every year, without fail, the girls get a new set of PJ's. Sometimes I must admit they are store bought, but most times I manage to take time to sew them up.

I do like Christmas themed pyjamas, but then when the holiday season is over I can't stand to see them... especially come spring time, it's almost like seasonal depression, I want to see the flowers in bloom and feel the heat of the sun on my face. So now you know where I'm going with the fabric selection on this PJ set I made for JubeJube using the Moto Maxx pattern by Love Notions (affiliate link).

I can't believe I haven't used this pattern before! I also can't believe I made JubeJube a size 7! Just a bit of trivia for you: the first pattern I ever made using a Love Notions pattern was the Trendy Tunic, I made JubeJube a size 2. Check out the cute face here (Click!) don't comment of the poor photography, lol.

The Moto Maxx set isn't just for PJ's, it can be used for everyday wear too. The top has a short sleeve option and also the long sleeve without the cuff, the hem line can be either a staight or scalloped. The usual features are included in this PDF, layered printing and trimless pages for quick assembly.

The pants have pocket options... front hip pockets and back pockets with flaps. I made the pants using a front hip pocket (note to self, check pockets before putting the pants in the laundry!).

I used the embroidery machine by Brother to add a special touch to the front of the t-shirt. I found Inspired Sayings by Designs by JuJu, and thought it would be a perfect match to the fabric and to JubeJube's way of thinking. The fabric is Art Gallery, Recollection purchased at Club Tissus.

And by the way, see that bunting in the back, just a sneak peek of a pattern being released in January 2018 by Rebecca Page. I'll have more about that when the pattern is released!

Canada Cup Part 1 Favorite Things Cami & Shorts

Today I get to talk about Favorite Things! To be quite honest this is the first time I've ever heard of Favorite Things Patterns and so glad I got to know them a little more through this blog tour.

Some time ago I was sent the Nighty Night and the Little Nighty Night in paper format, so you guessed it, I made Amelie and JubeJube some Nighties for the tour.

I started with the Little ones because I knew what fabric I wanted to use... Michael Miller's Tradewinds collection, it was sent to me by Candice at Sewing Portfolio ...(just some of the perks of being a Sewing Portfolio Ambassador!) Sewing Portfolio is a FREE membership site where you can build your portfolio and connect with brands and businesses. Learn more about it here (click!).

The pattern is designed for woven fabrics and the measurements given in the chart are spot on for the right fit and amount of ease for this style. As mentioned before, these are paper patterns, not PDF's so the first step was to cut out all the pieces. I'm going to share a little secret with you today about paper patterns, I actually love them! First, they're so easy to store and don't take up much space, they generally have a huge range of sizes and here's a little trick I learned a long time ago, I use my iron to get all the creased out of the paper which I wouldn't recommend doing  with printed paper and tape (don't ask, you don't want to know how I ruined that poor iron).

The instructions are quick to the point with lined drawings to help with the explanation. I added a lace trim to make girly it up at the top of the bodice and at the hem.

Amelia wanted Hawaii, she said she wanted to feel like she was on vacation so JubeJube agreed that she wanted the pineapples.

Those pineapples!! I love the pairing of these two fabrics, Marissa and Pineapple Express.

I did mention that this pattern was designed with woven fabrics in mind. But I just had to try it in a knit.

This is what I did to get this fit... First, I needed to size down, quite a bit. I didn't use a straight size 12, I had to use a biggers size for the top of the FRONT bodice to get full coverage and not have the seam across the bustline, but under the bust line. Assebling the top was quick with the serger and instead of inserting an elastic at the waistline like I did for the littles, I simply used clear elastic in the seam to prevent from stretching out.

The camisole is a bit on the long side (for me) I took 2 inches off. I also had to really size down on the boxers. But again, designed for a woven, not a knit so that would be normal to size down.

Will I be making these again, you can bet on it... I do like the way both the Little Nighty Night and Nighty Night patterns turned out!

Do I'll be here again on Thursday, maybe not modeled photos of my make... I bet you can wait to see! In the mean time, you really need to go check out the rest of the stops on this Canadian tour!
