Retro Romper One Thimble No. 20

A new issue of One Thimble (affiliate link) is out! Hard to imagine that One Thimble is celebrating its fifth year with issue No.20!
You'll want to read this post all the way to the end and enter the giveaway for a $50.00 voucher for your next purchases of the One Thimble e-zine.

It never fails, when Thread Faction gets a pattern published in One Thimble, it's the first one I have to try out. This issue Thread Faction has two patterns in the e-zine!

I started with the Retro Romper. I love everything about this style! JubeJube says she's super comfortable in it and I think she looks beach and play ready.

I used a cotton lycra blend that I had in my stash and snaps for the closure. Buttons ca also be used and tips for button holes in knits are given in the tutorial.

Instructions and tech drawings are really well done (as usual with Tread Faction) and included are some tips for sewing knits. For a size 7, I didn't even use up a full meter of fabric and including printing and pattern assembly I spent maybe 90 minutes on this sew.

The second pattern from Tread Faction in this issue is the Ringer Raglan. I just had to make a coordinating tee for Amelia. I used the same cotton lycra blend on the sleeve and used a plain white for the front and back... added a little whimsy with the Big Ocean Appliqués by Swoodson Says.

What I love about this raglan is the binding at the sleeve. I was able to use the same red binding on the neckline and the sleeve as I didn on the romper and I just think the contrast makes everything pop.

The appliqué was so fun to put together. I used prints that maybe wouldn't go well together for a garment but put them together as an appliqué and I think it turned out really cute!

So many fun things to sew in this issue like the Rock Pool Catch and the Saltwater Skirt, but also so many fun things to read too!
There's a great article about formalwear by So Sew Katie. This article gives a good jumping off point to making your own formalwear and couple of those is to use Pinterest as inspiration and not skimp on the quality of fabric. Check it out for yourself.
You'll also find a couple of extra fun tutorials, fun things to sew like the sun glasses case by The Crafting Fiend and the tote bag that can also be used as a beach bag by Libby and Mae.

Ok, enough from me, besides I need to go sew some more from this issue of One Thimble!
Check out the other stops on the tour!

One Thimble No.17 - Full Review

I had so much fun with this issue of One Thimble. One Thimble No. 17 (affiliate link) is so full of fun little and some not so little projects.

I stayed away from clothing this time and made several little things that can be perfect for gift giving.

The Blossom Flower Pincushion by My Little China Doll is a project I actually made twice. The first one wasn't to my liking so try, try again. The second row of petals didn't hug the center as much as in my second version. A little tip for that, simply pull that thread used to make the gathers really tight and secure it.

In the tutorial, it is suggested that instead of sewing the petals in place by hand, a glue gun can be used. I sewed mine in by hand, only because I couldn't find my glue gun I have to admit. Its just a bit longer but at least I know that if I gift this pincushion it won't fall apart. I tend to not used enough glue, lol.

This is also a perfect project for using up scraps that we can't bare to get rid of.

Now for the Flora Fiesta Embroidery project by Molly and Mama...

I didn't want to look too much at the original while I was trying to decide what colors go where. I went with the colored floss that I liked since there was no color chart included in the tutorial. This leaves a lot of room for creativity. I was also thinking at one point to make it using just white floss for a very monchromatic look.

I played around with different stitches, I added French knots to the center of flowers and used a stem stitch instead of backstitching. I was so excited about this project becasue I haven't had embroidered in such a long time. I started hand embroidering as a child and I just haven't taken the time to sit and get into a project.

I ended up reducing the pattern to 80% and was able to fit in in a 5 inch hoop. The suggested hoop size at 100% is 6 inches. The fabric is Robert Kaufman linen from Club Tissus.

Another fun gift done! This is great to hang on a wall in a child's room or use the design on a pocket or the front of a dress bodice.

On to my final project (for this blog post anyways). The Sewperior Fruit & Veg bags are such a fantastic idea for reducing waste! I used a mesh type screen fabric, again purchased at club Tissus.  I was beyon elated to see that they had this fabric on hand. It was a little more pricy than I thought it would be but in a long run it will save a lot on waste.

Grab a few of these bags before heading to the grocery store and they are perfect for fresh produce. What used to happen when I went grocery shopping is I would just drop the produce in the plastic bag in the fruit or vegetable drawer and often enough I would forget about it because I didn't take the time to take it out of those darn plastic bags. Now with these reusable bags I have to remove the porduce and prep it right away and I get to see what I have in the fridge.

I added a fun cotton print to the top of the bag to make the casings. Two sizes are mentioned in the tutorial. They are a great guideline but of course you can make them the size you want.

And yes, they make great hostess gifts, or teachers gifts, or anyone who is into reducing waste ans recycling.

Once again I also got to review the full issue and there are a couple of articles that got my attention. the first being 10 tips for faster sewing. A few of the tips I already did without knowing but one that I felt helpful was tip number 6. Its mostly a tip for bag making but the same tip can be useful when doing a lot of appliqué work and using Heat 'N Bond.

Then there's the article on Tiyamike Sewing by Jo Ong.  Its all about giving opportunity to women and girls in Blantyre, Malawi, Africa. These women and girls are learning to sew and learning about running there own business once they've graduated. Follow Tiyamike Sewing on Facebook  for more information.

Here's a quick look at what patterns you'll expect to in One Thimble No.17. Take a look at the other stops on this tour for more fun and more inspiration.

Summer Fun Series - Under the Sea

I've been taking it easy this summer and sewing up a lot of the fun things. This time its all about rag dolls with a fun summer theme. Great for JubeJube and Amelia to play make believe on those rainy days and the  project isn't too  involved that it takes so long to finish off.

I have no merit here I have to admit, its all Heidi & Finn and the Under the Sea rag doll mermaid pattern. And you can also find in the Heidi & Finn Etsy shop the dress up wardrobe patterns for the dolls.

To start off, it was a lot of fun to have the girls select fabric from the bin of left overs. Most of the pattern pieces are fat quarter friendly so these dolls are great scrap buster projects. Then it was about selecting the hair styles and clothes to put on the dolls.

They did have to be a little patient while I sewed the dolls up, but after that it was all about who would use the mermaid first. So glad they agreed they needed to share!

There are a few other mini pal sets available through the Heidi & Finn Etsy shop, all of them equally as adorable. And there are also dress up sets to be able to mix and match outfits. Last but not least (something on my to-do list) there's also this cute little carry all bag for a doll and clothes.

Now that JubeJube has an interest in sewing she could actually get one of the outfits sewn up with a little bit of help. These patterns are great beginner friendly projects.

Now time to go check out the other projects in the series! Enjoy your summer!

Its Hot in Here! The Swimsuit Edition

Today is a bit of a double duty post...2 tours 1 post Its part of The Swimsuit Edition Tour but also part of Ti's monthly tours.

I now I really don't have an excuse not to have more fun in the sun! Swimsuit No.2 which is the Agility Tank and Riptide Shorties by 5 Out Of 4 patterns.

At first I was concerned that this pattern wouldn't make the best swimsuit due to the amount of fabric on the tank top, but I really wanted something to hide the not so pretty results of having 4 kids. I know its a fact of life and just about everyone who's had kids have these warrior marks, right?! The amount of fabric doesn't weigh the suit down but I would suggest wearing it if you plan to win a swim race.

I also love how high the shorties go, they are really highwaisted. And the coverage on the butt is perfect!

I just want to quickly touch on all the options in the Agility Tank pattern. Seriously so full, including instructions on how to put in cups, on how to make it nursing friendly and what fabric to use to get the best suppport, because obviously it can also be used to make workout outfits paired with the Ninja leggings.

Be sure to check out Ula's post and round up of The Swimsuit Edition Tour and check out the other stops on Ti's tour. Both schedules are listed below, along with giveaways and an Instagram contest!

One Thimble #14

One Thimble 14 (affiliate link)  is out and with so much to see in this issue! One of Twig & Tale's patterns is featured in this issue and I just had to get up close with this one.

While out friends in the southern hemisphere are enjoying their summer weather, I'm  knee deep in snow. When I saw the hottie cover by Twig & Tale I thought it would be the perfect project ot keep warm and cozy, especially after a full day of playing in the snow. The of of snuggling up in a blanket with a hot water bottle and a fun book appeals to the kiddos and me.

Three different animals are included with the pattern, the cat, panda bear and owl. They are all adorable!

Since this project doesn't require much fabric I used what I had on hand, some off white terrycloth, and flannel for the facial features. I used a little Heatn' Bond to get the eyes and nose on.

And that cute tail! ha!

Here's a look at some of the other contributers to issue #14 of One Thimble. I'll be back in a couple of days with the patterns from Petite Stitchery and Bobkin Designs. Don't forget to pick up your copy of One Thimble today!

Everyday Wear with Petite Stitchery & Co.

Hey all, I know its been a while...more than a month actually since I've posted to my blog. But I've been busy with tons of fun stuff that I can't wait to show you. For now here we are to celebrate everyday wear with Petite Stitchery & Co. Be sure to read to the end and enter the rafflecopter easy giveaway!

This group of three talented ladies have created a pattern collection with so much vesitilty and style that its easy to used for dressing up and everyday fun.

From this collection I've made the Sparrow tunic, the Fawn leggings (with and without the tuxedo stripe) and my favorite so far, the Rosemary crop top.

I made Sparrow and Fawn for Amelia. She just loves peplum style tops.

For the Fawn leggings I used a fun stitching technique (flat lock) that I learned in a class about exploring and using your serger to its full potential. It just gives the garment that little extra detail to make it so much more interesting and creative. So much more fun stitching techiniques and fun information to come...this all from a class that I took at Penelope-Machines a Coudre.

Now about Rosemary! So to start I've been hoarding this fabric from Birch Fabrics for some time now...it was purchased from Phat Quarter Shop on Etsy and there is even a facebook group...go check them out to get details on Black Friday deals and savings!

Rosemary is a great layering piece, with this huge collar. *Here's a tip make sure if you have a driectional fabric to cut the collar upside down to get the print right side up on you collar. it would just be so sad if those little girls would be upside down.

JubeJube also has the basic style of the Fawn leggings on. The fabric is from Art Gallery, purchased at my local fabric shop.

I do think that there is so much potential with this wonderful little pattern company. There is just one think I would really like to see, please, pretty please stop putting sleeves cut on the fold. This is my opinion, but its so worth the extra time, effort, ink and paper to get the full sleeve simply becasue the front and back sleeve should have a slightly different shape. It just makes for such a better fit.

ok, I need to go play the fishing game with the girls...it looks like so much fun!
